Exploring Colour, 29th February, Barnsley.
A brand-new workshop for 2026! Join Richard in his studio to explore the wonderful world of colour in all its glory. This workshop is aimed at those who wish to develop a practical knowledge of colour theory, colour mixing and how to develop a personal colour palette.
What will I learn?
The basics of colour theory.
How to mix colours and avoid muddying.
How to develop a personal colour palette.
Colour is at the heart of most artists work and is a very personal thing. But where do you start? How do you arrive at a workable palette that offers you a wide range of colours and tones? This workshop will open up the mysteries of colour by exploring shades of primary colours to create a wide range secondary colours that can be applied to most subjects.
What will I make?
Using Michael Harding artists oil paint, you will start by exploring a basic colour palette which explores basic colour theory before expanding into the wider possibilities offered by utilising different primary colour shades. For example, Ultramarine Blue mixed with Lemon Yellow will give you a different green to Prussian Blue and Lemon Yellow. There are so many possibilities for colour mixing you need at least a day to get to grips with them.
Gradually, through your explorations you will arrive at mixes of colours that appeal to you more than others, helping you to develop a more personal palette which expresses your individual creativity. Towards the end of the day you will be given an image to paint using your deeper knowledge of colour and colour mixing.
This workshop will give you the tools to make more informed decisions about colour in a way that is meaningful to you. It may well be the most important workshop you attend this year!
