Portrait Painting, 25th-26th October
Portrait Painting, 25th-26th October
Painting a portrait can feel like a daunting undertaking. In this workshop, you will learn a structured approach which utilises blocking in techniques whilst observing the overall facial structure before gradually tightening up the details. By the end of the workshop you will have gained the confidence to develop your own portrait paintings with your newly acquired observational skills.
This two-day workshop is ideal for artists from beginner to intermediate levels who would like to gain experience in painting portraits from life in oils.
What will I learn?
How to create an Alla prima portrait from life.
How to achieve a realistic likeness.
The importance and principals of measuring and facial structure.
How to approach painting the human face as a whole before moving into details.
How to mix realistic flesh tones.
Advice on materials to get you started with your own portraits.
Course Structure
Day One: Workshopping the Portrait – The first day will focus on the fundamentals, how to build an initial structure in paint, measuring and proportions. You will also spend time mixing skin tones from direct observation to the model. You will also discuss materials and a colour palette ideal for portraiture.
Day Two: Practice with Support – On day two you will take everything you have learned in day one and put it into practice. The day will begin with a fast-portraits exercise to get you warmed up before completing your own portrait. Support will be given throughout the day so you never feel lost.
Testimonial:“Not only did I learn loads but I had lots of fun as well. Richard is an amazing artist and it felt like he really wanted to help you be your best artist. I came away from the workshop with new skills, great art and a new confidence in myself.” Laura Horrocks-Barlow
